Description
On the occasion of the Thomas Wolfe Society's 2008 meeting, longtime member Harold D. Nichols of St. Louis assembled a number of materials documenting the visit that inspired Wolfe to write The Lost Boy. Among the textual and photographic items that Nichols incorporated into a tripartite standing panel exhibited at the meeting (1) were two articles published almost thirty years apart and reprinted here. (2) The first appeared in the now defunct St. Louis Star-Times for 20 September 1935 under the exuberant headline, "Thomas Wolfe Visits City--Says He'll Write a 'Really Great' Book." (3) Reporter Reed Hynds paints an appealing contemporary portrait of Wolfe having a good time in St. Louis, and he registers his surprise at finding the visiting author "in person, always aware of the comical aspect of things." In the second article, from the October 1963 issue of St. Louis Magazine, authors John Dressel and Sol Gross recount their own quest for "The Lost [House] of Thomas Wolfe."
